Wine farms and wine tasting opportunities abound in the Cape and it is often hard to choose where to go. Sometimes it is fun to look for something a little bit different and this is where Vergenoegd Wine Farm near Stellenbosch fits the “bill”! Visit www.vergenoegd.co.za
Vergenoegd meaning “content and cheerful” lives up to its name. If you want a morning of entertainment look no further. Head out on the N2 towards Stellenbosch and make your way to the farm by about 11am. You will be treated to the spectacle of the “workforce” coming in from the vineyards for a well-deserved swim and tasty treat.
The farm has over 800 Indian Runner ducks which are used to munch up the snails and pests in the vines. These comical ducks stand upright and run which in itself is entertaining. After a busy morning they head straight for the pond for a well-deserved swim and a quick nibble. It is great fun watching the staff trying to herd the ducks out of the pond to get ready for the duck parade. No sooner do they have them in a reasonably orderly line, then there are always a few wayward members who escape and the herding starts again. You can even watch the ducks at work whilst sipping a glass of the farm’s “runner duck” wine! The farm are serious about their pest control and are pioneers in their field. They take conservation seriously and have the Vergenoegd Waterbird Habitat project in place.
Herding Ducks
It’s a great place for the whole family as there are lots of choices for activities and food. The farm offers several tasty options. They have gourmet picnics including “the driving duck, the running duck or the duckling delight.” You could opt for a “Taste of Vergenoegd” which includes the vineyard platter. We settled for this and as we relaxed under the majestic trees and sipped delicious wine we were treated to the “Duck Parade”! The ducks waddle through the gardens adding a touch of colour and fun to your afternoon’s entertainment. Children can have great fun meeting the duck herders and having a chance to hold ducklings. There are also various “blending” experiences to try including wine, coffee, tea and olive oil.
Duck Parade
It’s a really good day out and you can fit in a visit to Stellenbosch too if you so desire.
